Administering Emergency Oxygen

The purpose of the American Red Cross Administering Emergency Oxygen course is to give participants the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to a victim of a breathing emergency using breathing devices, including resuscitation masks, bag-valve-mask resuscitators (BVMs) and emergency oxygen.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be awarded the American Red Cross Administering Emergency Oxygen certification, which is valid for 2 years from the date of completion. Registration and payment does not guarantee certification as students must meet all American Red Cross requirements for certification.

Prerequisite(s): Current adult, child or infant CPR certification.

Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED

The American Red Cross Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED course incorporates the latest science and teaches students to recognize and care for a variety of first aid emergencies such as burns, cuts, scrapes, sudden illnesses, head, neck, back injuries, heat and cold emergencies and how to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies to help victims of any age – adults (about 12 years and older) and pediatric (infants and children up to 12 years of age). Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate for Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED, valid for two years.

This certification course covers the following modules:

  • Adult CPR and AED
  • Pediatric (Child and Infant) CPR and AED
  • Choking
  • Sudden Illness
  • Life-Threatening Bleeding
  • Injuries and Environmental Emergencies

Course Information:

Approximate Course Length: 6 hours and 30 minutes (Including a 30-minute lunch break)

Course Format: Instructor-Led Training (in-person)

American Red Cross Lifeguarding and Administering Emergency Oxygen

The primary purpose of the courses in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to:

  • Prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies.
  • Provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) professionals take over.

To participate in the Lifeguarding course, participants must:

  • Be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the Lifeguarding course.
  • Successfully complete the two prerequisite swimming skills evaluations:
    • Prerequisite 1: Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest:
      • Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed).
      • Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
      • Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
    • Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
      • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed).
      • Submerge to a depth of 7 – 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
      • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface.
      • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

The American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers (CPRO) program trains individuals with a duty to act including lifeguards, EMS personnel, police, security personnel, firefighters and athletic trainers—to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants until more advanced medical personnel take over. This course is also intended for individuals serving in roles that would be called upon to provide support in emergency situations, such as aquatic facility, gym/fitness club or community/recreation center staff. Members of the community are also welcome to take this course to obtain a CPR certification.

The certification obtained from successful completion of this course is valid for 2 years from the date of the training upon successful completion of all Red Cross course requirements. Registration alone does not guarantee certification.

This course is taught in a blended format, which requires all participants to complete a 2-hour online learning prior to the in-person skills session. An email with a link to the online training will be contained in the confirmation email received upon completion of registration.

This course is not designed to meet the regulatory requirements for California Child Care staff. This course meets requirements outlined by YMCA of the USA and American Red Cross for Aquatics certifications.

Swim Lesson Instructor: Teaching Techniques for Disability and Diversity of Ability

This course provides current YMCA Swim Lessons instructors the opportunity to recertify their certification and support understanding and implementation of the swim lessons program. In addition, instructors will gain knowledge, skills and abilities in teaching students with disabilities and diversity of abilities.

Instructors can expect to gain an understanding of the following: the community need and how the Y is positioned to meet that need, the impact instructors have on program success when teaching in a way that supports a diversity of abilties, the range of diversity in abilities that an instructor may teach and tips for facilitating swim lessons, the tools and resources available to help deliver the YMCA Swim Lesson program, and how to individualize lessons to meet participants’ goals.

There is a classroom and pool component to this course.

Swim Lessons Instructor Certification

This course awards the YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Certification. After successful completion of this course, instructors will be able to identify components of the YMCA Swim Lessons continuum, demonstrate the behaviors of an effective YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor, maintain an inclusive environment of learning while keeping order in a positive and safe environment, employ swim teaching techniques that break down the critical features of a swimmer’s skill progression at any age and stage and demonstrate the swim instructor’s role in the safety process and during an emergency.

Candidates must be able to tread water for two minutes and demonstrate Stage 5 proficiency in at least four of the following six strokes by swimming 25 yards of each: Front Crawl, Breaststroke, Sidestroke, Butterfly, Elementary Backstroke, and Backstroke.

Prerequisites for Enrollment (click on class names for upcoming offerings):

Upon completion of payment, you will be emailed the link to register for the YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor v6 course in the YMCA of the USA’s Learning and Career Development Center (LCDC).
