Administering Emergency Oxygen
This skill boost for administering emergency oxygen provides training in the use of advanced resuscitation and airway management equipment, including oxygen delivery systems and suctioning devices. The training gives participants the skills and knowledge needed to safely and effectively:
- Administer emergency oxygen to a person experiencing a breathing emergency.
- Clear and maintain an open airway using suctioning.
Prerequisites
Participants of the skill boost must be certified or enrolled in Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers, Basic Life Support, Advanced Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Adult CPR and AED, Pediatric CPR and AED or an equivalent Red Cross course to take this skill boost.
Course Objectives
- Recognize a breathing emergency.
- Provide effective ventilations using a resuscitation mask or a bag-valve-mask (BVM) resuscitator.
- Explain how administering emergency oxygen can benefit a person with hypoxia or difficulty breathing and identify situations when it may be appropriate to administer emergency oxygen.
- Demonstrate how to assemble a variable-flow-rate oxygen system safely and effectively.
- State safety precautions related to the storage, handling and use of emergency oxygen.
- State when and how to use a pulse oximeter.
- Demonstrate how to safely and effectively use a suctioning device.
Course Duration
The skill boost is an instructor-led training conducted by a Red Cross-certified instructor. There are no online sessions to complete. The total skill boost instruction time is 1 hour, 55 minutes, not including breaks. Additional time may be added to accommodate breaks.
Certification Information
Participants who successfully complete the Skill Boost: Administering Emergency Oxygen will be issued the following American Red Cross certificate: Administering Emergency Oxygen that is valid for 2 years. To maintain the Administering Emergency Oxygen certification, participants must successfully complete the American Red Cross Skill Boost: Administering Emergency Oxygen course.

Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED
The American Red Cross Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED course incorporates the latest science and teaches students to recognize and care for a variety of first aid emergencies such as burns, cuts, scrapes, sudden illnesses, head, neck, back injuries, heat and cold emergencies and how to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies to help victims of any age – adults (about 12 years and older) and pediatric (infants and children up to 12 years of age). Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate for Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED, valid for two years.
This certification course covers the following modules:
- Adult CPR and AED
- Pediatric (Child and Infant) CPR and AED
- Choking
- Sudden Illness
- Life-Threatening Bleeding
- Injuries and Environmental Emergencies

First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor
The purpose of the American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach the
basic-level American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED courses, select Skill Boosts and Bloodborne Pathogens Training.
Prerequisites
Instructor candidates in the American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor course must possess a current basic-level
certification in First Aid/CPR/AED or equivalent.
Course Delivery Method
The First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor course is offered in a blended learning format that includes:
- First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor course online session
- First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor course in-person session
Course Objectives
After completing the course, instructor candidates will be able to:
- Exhibit the characteristics required of an American Red Cross representative and role model.
- Follow the directives and procedures related to the conduct and administration of American Red Cross courses, including the Instructor Agreement and Instructor Code of Conduct.
- Conduct courses in a manner that helps participants to stay engaged in the learning process and meet course objectives.
- Perform applicable First Aid/CPR/AED skills to the standard at instructor-level skill proficiency.
- Plan for and ensure participants’ health and safety during training.
- Maintain complete and accurate records and reports.
- Plan, organize and conduct the First Aid/CPR/AED course in accordance with Red Cross policies and procedures and the requirements of the specific class they will be teaching.
- Facilitate peer-to-peer learning among course participants.
- Monitor participants’ practice, evaluate performance and provide corrective feedback and encouragement that is consistent with the skill assessment tools (i.e., Skill Practice Sheets, Assessment Scenario Flowcharts and Assessment Scenario Tools).
- Recognize that the requirements in the Assessment Scenario Tools are criteria for ascertaining proficiency.
- Effectively use program materials and training equipment.
- Explain procedures for acknowledging course completion and accessing American Red Cross digital certificates.
- Deliver quality, consistent and standardized content by following the First Aid/CPR/AED instructor manual(s) and other program materials.

Lifeguarding and Administering Emergency Oxygen - Blended Learning

The primary purpose of the courses in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to:
- Prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies.
- Provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) professionals take over.
To participate in the Lifeguarding course, participants must:
- Be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the Lifeguarding course.
- Successfully complete the two prerequisite swimming skills evaluations:
- Prerequisite 1: Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest:
- Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed).
- Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
- Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
- Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed).
- Submerge to a depth of 7 – 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
- Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface.
- Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Lifeguarding Instructor
The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor course is to train instructor candidates
to teach the basic-level courses and modules in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program.
Prerequisites
Instructor candidates must:
- Be at least 17 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the Lifeguarding Instructor course.
- Possess a current basic-level certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding (Including Deep
Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid. - Obtain all required instructor and participant course materials before starting the course.
- Successfully complete the online session of the Lifeguarding Instructor course prior to the precourse
session. - Successfully complete the prerequisite skill assessment scenario to continue in the course.
Failure to meet any of the prerequisites prohibits an instructor candidate from continuing in the
instructor course. The candidate must take the full Lifeguarding Instructor course at a later date after
they are able to meet all of the prerequisites.
Course Delivery Method
The Lifeguarding Instructor course is offered in a blended learning format that combines an online session with in-person sessions conducted by a Red Cross–certified Lifeguarding instructor trainer.

- Identify key responsibilities of American Red Cross–certified Lifeguarding instructors.
- Conduct American Red Cross Lifeguarding courses and modules in a manner that helps participants to stay engaged in the learning process and meet course objectives.
- Describe the purpose of, and training foundations for, the courses and modules in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program.
- Describe the core competencies that form the basis for the curriculum of American Red Cross Lifeguarding courses.
- Describe the process used to ensure that the content of American Red Cross training courses is grounded in science.
- Identify the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program benchmarks for lifeguards and facility operations.
- Describe how the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program course materials are used by instructors and participants.
- Effectively plan, schedule and prepare to teach the courses and modules in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program.
- Use various teaching methods to effectively deliver the course content.
- Follow the lesson plans and outlines in the Lifeguarding Instructor’s Manual to deliver high-quality standardized training.
- Effectively run skill practice sessions, skill drills, putting it all together activities and multiple-rescuer team response scenarios.

- Identify the next steps instructors should take after obtaining their American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor certification.
