Adaptive Programs
The Y promotes and provides access to healthy lifestyles for all children and adults, including those with disabilities. Through positive recreational experiences, we emphasize each person’s abilities and individuality to help participants build social skills. Children in our adaptive programs will work toward a healthy mind, body, and spirit.
Adaptive Aquatic Therapy Pool Access
At the Y, we strive to offer inclusive programming for individuals with special needs and diverse abilities. This open swim program allows those with special needs to have the opportunity to swim in our warm-water therapy pool. This program provides access to the pool during specific times of the day, this is not an instructional program.
Water Safety & Swim Test Requirements
Youth members, 11 and younger, who want to swim independently while at the YMCA without an adult in the pool, will be required to pass a swim test. Once the swim test is passed, they will be given a bracelet indicating that they have passed. This bracelet should be brought to the Y and worn every time the youth swims.
The following are the requirements for the swim test:
- Swim, head down for 25 yards. Must come up and take a breath and continue swimming without standing up.
- Tread water for 60 seconds
- Jump in from the side of the pool, doing a jump push turn, and grab to return back to the wall.
If a child declines a swim test and/or does not pass the swim test, an adult must be in the water within arms’ reach of the child at all times. Each adult can be responsible for up to two non-swimmers. The YMCA reserves the right to require an adult to be present in the water, even if a child has passed the swim test.
The YMCA may, at its discretion, implement a reservation policy for this open swim program.

Diverse Abilities Private Swim Lessons - 1 Person: 30 min (Ages 2-17)
This is a set of (3) 30-minute private swim lessons for your child or teen with one of the Y’s swim instructors. This is a program for swim learners 2-17 years of age with special needs and/or chronic health conditions.
The three lessons provide an introduction to the Y’s adaptive swim program. It’s an opportunity for the instructor to get to know your learner, begin some instruction, and provide tips for helping your learner practice new skills. The instructor will also be able to make recommendations for additional Y lessons moving forward (swim skill level; parent assistance needed; private vs group setting), making it a great place to start!
Aquatic Department approval is required to register in this program. If you are interested in registering, please complete the application below and email to [email protected].

In small groups, swimmers are taught the fundamentals of swimming, while focusing on water safety. Classes are structured to help create a safe and fun environment.

In Stage 2, students focus on body position and control, directional change, and forward movement in the water while also continuing go practice how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water.
Parents are permitted to be in the water with the instructor’s support in this class. To better serve your child, the instructor may ask a parent to enter the water to support the learning process.
